If you have a cardboard house does it mean the three little pigs are about to come and blow your house down? Not if it is a part of Houses of the Future, an exhibition about new ideas, testing news materials and challenges the boundaries of housing and garden choices.
Sydney Olympic Park is the new host of an exhibition offering a fascinating glimpse into the future of design, innovation and what we will be calling ‘home sweet home’ in the future. Houses of the Future featuressixindividual homes constructed of concrete, cardboard, timber, glass, clay and steel, as well as featuring innovations in landscape architecture and an orientation/learning pavilion.
Previously housed at another Australian icon – The Sydney Opera House, the relocation of the exhibition has enabled the addition of some interesting elements to the display. A key element of the exhibition will be its links to the environment, as the houses are operating through WRAMS, Sydney Olympic Park’s recycled water plant; which in itself saves approximately 850 million litres of drinking water each year.
In addition to the houses there is a living ‘salad bar’ which demonstrates a new way of farming fruit and vegetables - this narrow wall grows a variety of herbs and plants that are completely self-sufficient.
The exhibition is completely free to the public and educational tours can be organised for schools and other interested groups.
The Houses of the Future exhibition is located at Jacaranda Square, Australia Avenue, Sydney Olympic Park. It is open from 10am – 3.45pm everyday until 30 October, 2005
